Qatharsis!

17

An exciting and busy season awaits QAT this year with a total of seventeen concerts! Our show 1938 will be presented 10 times throughout the island of Montreal thanks to the Montreal Arts Council Touring program. This will be followed by a short recital in Pro Musica’s Mélodînes series at Place des Arts in March as well as by a wonderful invitation from the SMCQ to participate in their Homage to our friend Ana Sokolovic.  Then we are off to Europe with our 2009 production Birds that will be presented 5 times in Montpellier, France, in May 2012.

More good news: the film that we improvised the music for, Little Theatres: Homage to the Mineral of Cabbage, was selected for several festivals across the world including the Toronto International Film Festival, Montreal's Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, and the Stockholm International Film Festival.

Film in Festivals!

Ensemble QAT improvised the music for a short stop-motion animation film that has been selected for several festivals across the world.   Coming soon to Montreal:  Little Theatres: Homage to the Mineral of Cabbage, by Toronto filmmaker Stephanie Dudley, is part of the official selection of Montreal's Festival du Nouveau Cinéma.  Ensemble QAT had a splendid time improvising the music for this short film in September 2010!

In 2011 in Montreal it will soon be 1938!

QAT 1938

Ensemble QAT’s show 1938 was just chosen to be part of the Montreal Arts Council’s tour next season.

Thanks to this program QAT will be able to present 1938 in numerous venues on the island of Montreal.

1938 features a fictional Jewish music critic as the narrator.  His off-stage voice is broadcast throughout the hall as he tells the audience of his travels across Europe, fleeing the Nazis.  This narration is available in English, French, or in a bilingual version.

Through a series of letters the critic shares his mounting distress and concern with regards to the persecution of the Jewish people.  He talks about his life up until then, about the events that are suddenly occurring around him, and about the composers whom he encounters on his flight  through Europe and into America. Music by Bela Bartok, Paul Hindemith, Kurt Weill,  Cole Porter and Jacob Jacobs.

Be sure to visit our site to find out when 1938 will be playing near you!

No Migration This Fall!

QAT has chosen not to migrate this fall as a wonderful autumn awaits the ensemble in Montreal. QAT will be presenting its prize-winning Birds show in four Maisons de la culture this October and November.

Birds is a unique show where written and improvised music, lighting, poetry and movement all come together to highlight today’s music in a playful, sensitive and accessible way. The program is the following : Bird’s Fractal Voice by Marco di Bari (Italy), Bird in a Tangled Sky by Jocelyn Morlock (Canada) and four thematic improvisations by the ensemble's musicians.

In addition to these shows QAT had the pleasure of creating the music for filmmaker Stephanie Dudley's short stop-motion animation film Little Theatres: Homage to the Mineral of Cabbage.  QAT had a great time improvising the complete soundtrack for this film.

Fiscal Sponsorship

Ensemble QAT is now registered for the Montreal Arts Council's fiscal sponsorship program.  This is a program that enables small ensembles such as QAT to receive donations from individuals and companies.

It is a fairly simple process. If you are interested in making a donation, you write a cheque in the Conseil des arts de Montréal's name specifiying that it is for Ensemble QAT.  The Conseil des arts de Montréal - Montreal Arts Council then sends you an income tax receipt for the amount of your donation.  These funds help us promote the ensemble abroad, maintain the high quality of our productions and also give us encouragement, support and confidence.
